Is your child learning to walk?  When my daughter was learning to walk it was such an adventurous time for her.  She could explore all the places she had been eyeing for months.  I enjoyed watching her learn and grow through that phase.  It was full of laughs but it was also full of no’s!  People kept telling me that entering the time that I needed to baby proof my house.

They told me to put everything out of reach but I wondered how accurate they were in their advice to me?  If I took everything out of her reach and never said no how would she learn limits and boundaries?  Everything would be accessible to her if I took all the valuables away.  I wanted her to learn that sometimes things are off limits and out of reach then when she became older and more responsible she could earn the privilege of touching and experiencing new things.

So I didn’t baby proof my house.  We said a lot of “no touch” and we saw some tears shed along the way but I saw her starting to learn.  My daughter learned that there were many more things that she was allowed to touch and reach, she also learned to obey even when she didn’t understand why.  Now looking back I can only hope that lesson saved her from many painful experiences.

I love my daughter with all my heart but when she was born she joined an existing family.  We didn’t stop our daily lives and routines when she joined us.  We didn’t rearrange everything in her world just so we didn’t have to say or teach her no.  We did however enjoy watching her learn and grow even if that meant a few tears along the way.  I’m Dionna Sanchez founder of Emphasis on Mom.  Come and visit me at http://www.emphasisonmoms.com
