Hi
Baby Talk Radio listeners this is Renee Canham from Monkey Bums (http://www.monkeybums.com).
When you are pregnant you have so many things to think about. One of the
very important things you need to think about is where you want to have your
baby. The traditional route is a hospital birth and hospital births are
perfect for any woman that has a high risk pregnancy.
Your
high risk if you have high blood pressure, if you have an infection or most
people know if they are a high risk pregnancy. Hospital births are perfect
for that. A tip about hospital births is they tend to have more
interventions during birth, most hospitals require IV fluid and they also
require fetal monitoring which requires you to lie down during labor for
periods of time.
Another negative about a hospital birth is that they keep track of how long
you have been in labor and they time your birth and they are more likely to
intervene if your birth is taking longer than they think it should. A
positive thing about the hospital is that if you want any kind of pain
relief or medication you have to be in the hospital for that. And you are
also there with trained medical staff and doctors in case anything goes
wrong. Another option is a birth center birth.
You
can give birth in a free standing birth center. You can give birth, some
OB’s work out of birth centers and also midwives. You can be in a
comfortable birthing setting; they usually have a comfortable bed, a room
that doesn’t look at all like a labor and delivery room. It doesn’t have a
tear down bed or anything like that. Of ten there is a bathtub, for the
most part there is no mediation, no pain relief mediations out of a birthing
center although some do have that option.
It
makes births really comfortable but you are also there in a center with all
the trained staff there. Another option is home birth where you give birth
in the comfort of your own home. You usually have a midwife, although many
people are going the unassisted home birth route. Most people have a
midwife and that person is like your caretaker and they take care of you
through your whole pregnancy.
They
make sure your blood pressure is fine and that you are eating healthy, etc.
Then you go into labor at your own house and you stay there. One of the big
pluses about a home birth is you don’t have to question when do I go to the
hospital or am I far enough along to go to the hospital or birth center.
You just stay in at your own house and have labor and delivery at your own
home.
You
are 100% of the time un-medicated because home births do not having any type
of medications. If you are looking for any type of medicated birth a home
birth is not for you. It is definitely my recommendation (a home birth).
I’ve had all three experiences. My first was born in a hospital, our second
was born in a birth center and our third was born at home. I wish I had had
all three at home.
The
home birth was by far the calmest and the easiest birth. We wanted our
family to be able to be there and also our younger kids to be there and the
home birth was the perfect opportunity for that. I also recommend that no
matter what kind of birth you are having have a doula, a support person that
is there with you.
Even
if you have done natural childbirth classes or if you feel I’m really great
about giving birth it’s still nice to have someone there to help take care
of you and to take care of you and your husband or partner as a whole unit.
Doulas are amazing. It’s one thing to look into.
It’s
important to know that you have options when you are giving birth. You can
choose you don’t just have to have a hospital birth! There are alternate
places. Stay tuned for next time when I’m going to talk about more natural
childbirth options and childbirth classes. Talk to you soon.
